Jankovich through

STUTTGART: Defending champion Jelena Jankovic needed just over an hour to breeze past Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-1 and book her place in the second round of Stuttgart’ Open. Jankovic will face Germany’s Sabine Lisicki following her 6-4, 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder. Earlier teenager Victoria Azarenka became the first seed to go out when she lost her second round game to Argentina’s Gisela Dulko in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Fifth-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, Russian compatriot and last year’s finalist Nadia Petrova also made it into the second round. — AFP

Bolt escapes injury

KINGSTON: Olympic athletics sensation Usain Bolt suffered only minor injuries on Wednesday when his BMW skidded off the road and overturned in a ditch, his manager Norman Peart said. Bolt, 22, won gold medals in the 100m, the 200m and the 4x100m relay at the Beijing Games last August, setting world records in all three events. Sergeant David Shepherd of Old Harbour police in St Catherine said the accident occurred on Highway 2000. Police said the vehicle was extensively damaged but neither Bolt nor the unidentified woman traveling with him was seriously hurt. — AFP
