Nepal triumph
KATHMANDU: Nepali national team, who is currently in Sri Lanka for their final preparation for the upcoming ACC Trophy Elite Cup, recorded a thrilling two-run victory over a local team in a friendly match on Thursday. Batting first, Nepal made 248-7 in 45 overs with Sharad Vesawkar (67) and Mahesh Chhetry (51) scoring a half century each. Kanishka Chaugain also contributed 43 and Shakti Gauchan made not out 28. In reply the Sri Lankan team made 246-6 in their allotted overs. Vesawkar also returned to take four wickets while Paras Khadka claimed one wicket. Nepal will play two more warm-up matches before leaving for Malaysia for the Elite Cup slated for July 23 to August 3 in Malaysia. — HNS
C Div qualifier
KATHMANDU: Ganesh Maharjan scored the 30th minute winner to help Pharping Youth Club beat Siddhipur Sports Club 1-0 and guide his team to the Group C semi-finals here at the C Division League qualifying tournament in Sano Gaucharan grounds on Thursday. Likewise, Jwala Bhairav Youth Club and Shangri-La Youth Club also made it to the Group D quarter-finals. Jwala Bhairav beat Om Youth Club 3-0 with Arun KC scoring twice and Rupesh Bista adding the third goal while Shangri-La also defeated Chandra Jyoti Samaj 3-0. Suraj Pradhan scored a brace and Roshan Lama added another for Shangri-La. — HNS

LALITPUR: Badri Lal Nepali, Manish Hamal, Bhagwati Prasad Sharma, Shyam Shrestha, Ratna Byanjankar and R Bajracharya share the lead with three points after the third round of the second Madan Memorial National Youth Open Chess Tournament here on Thursday. Bijay Shrestha is second with 2.5 points while Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Deepak Maharjan, Keshav Shrestha, Rajendra Shrestha, Rajan Khatri, Prakash Nepal, Niraj Niraula, Laxmi Nath Kandel, Harish Chandra Chaulagain, Uttam Raj Thapa, Ganesh Man Duwal, Surbir Lama, Roshan Jaiswal and the only lady participant Manolisa Khumbu share the third place. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Two teams from Golden Gate — A and B — entered the third round of the first Fr Donnelly 3 on 3 Men’s Open Basketball Tournament, organised by Godavari Alumni Association, here on Thursday. Joining them in the third round were White House, ABCW, Prime ‘A’, EECC and Kathmandudes. In the women’s section, Valley Public beat Ace 21-19, 21-2; Rato Bangala ‘A’ overcame Rato Bangala ‘Junior’ 21-3, 21-13; and Snow Leopard beat Prime 10-21, 21-4, 21-2. — HNS
