Beach Volleyball
KATHMANDU: A nine-member Nepali team is leaving for Bangladesh on Thursday to participate in the International Beach Volleyball Tournament. National volleyball team captain Bharat Shah along with Prem Bhandari, Ishwor Dhamala and Kailash Dutta Bhatta will compete in men's section while Nita Kumari Shah and Chuda Khadka will participate in the women's section. The players will be accompanied to Bangladesh by three Nepal Volleyball Association officials. Nepali men's team won the event twice (2006 and 2007) and finished runners up once (2008). The women's team reached final twice in the 2007 and 2008. — HNS
Basketball tourney
LALITPUR: Lalitpur District Basketball Association and South Siders Basketball Club are jointly organising the first South Siders Invitational Basketball Tournament here from Thursday. In all eight teams will fight for the championship played under league-cum-knockout format. Revolver, Nakhipot Youth Club, K&K International College and Golden Gate are in Group 'A' while Third Eye, Re-United, Trinity College, Prime College and Nepal Commerce Campus are in Group 'B'. Top two teams from each groups will qualify for the semis. — HNS
Rijendra wins
KATHMANDU: Rijendra Rajbhandari, Niraj Niraula, Prem Krishna Maharjan and Prakash Nepal won their respective games on the sixth day of the Mumbai Mayor's Cup International Open Chess Tournament on Wednesday. Rijendra defeated India's Rajesh RC Gupta and Niraj beat S Siddhartha to earn 4.5 points each. Nepal's FIDE Master Manish Hamal, who had 5 points so far, lost to India's FIDE Master Nikhil Shyam. — HNS
