KATHMANDU: Roots Fashion and DHL Express advanced to the quarter-finals from Group ‘A’ at the Six-a-side Football Tournament here during the 1st National Corporate Games on Wednesday. Also making it to the last eight were New Business Age and Bottlers Nepal from Group ‘B’, Buddha Air and Nabil Bank from Group ‘C’ and Machhindra Bank and LIC from Group ‘D’. KATHMANDU: Youth Vision Club Nepal and Nuwakot District Sports Development Committee are jointly organising the Himalayan View Mountain Bike Championship on Saturday. Top three bikers will be awarded with cash prizes, said the organisers on Wednesday. The race begins from the National Sports Council premises and ends at Chisapani. — HNS

KATHMANDU: VS Niketan Higher Secondary School is organising the fifth VS Niketan Valleywide Karate Tournament on February 29-30. About 200 students from 25 schools from Kathmandu will vie for 22 gold medals, said the Founder Principal of the school Dr Baburam Pokharel here at a press meet on Wednesday. Boys’ section includes 14 categories while the girls’ has only eight. — HNS

KATHMANDU: The Team ‘A’ of the hosts Antique Bhadgaun Boarding School (ABBS) and Sagarmatha advanced to the final of the second ABBS Inter-school Football Tournament on Wednesday. Antique ‘A’ defeated Antique ‘B’ 3-1 and Sagarmatha overcame Advance Academy 2-1 in tie-breaker after a 6-6 draw in normal time. Sajan, Suresh and Rigen scored for Antique ‘A’ while Robin replied for Antique ‘B’. In the other semi-final, Pradeep Acharya scored four and Raj Kumar Acharya added two for Sagarmatha while Birendra Rajbah struck four times and Bibek Khadka and Raju Manandhar netted one goal apiece for Advance. Warne to lead Jaipur

NEW DELHI: Retired Australian leg-spin genius Shane Warne has been named captain and coach of the Jaipur team in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchise announced on Wednesday. “We were looking for a legendary cricketer whom all players will look up to,” said Fraser Castellino, chief executive of Emerging Media. Warne is one of the four foreign cricketers in the side, others being South African captain Graeme Smith and Pakistan’s Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal. — AFP

Williams upset

MEMPHIS: Top seed and defending champion Venus Williams was upset in the opening round of the Cellular South Cup by qualifier Petra Kvitova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Tatiana Golovin was beaten by Bethanie Mattek 6-4, 6-4 while Shahar Peer of Israel beat Ahsha Rolle 6-2, 6-1. Caroline Wozniacki also moved into the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Milagros Sequera. Olga Govortsova and Sofia Arvidsson also reached third round. In the men’s section, Thomas Johansson edged Marat Safin 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2). Also winning were Radek Stepanek and Sam Querrey. — AP
