KATHMANDU: Hosts Daffodil, Mt Glory, Niten Memorial School (NIMS) and VS Niketan advanced to the semi-finals of the first Daffodil Cup Inter-school Basketball here on Wednesday. Daffodil beat Learning Realm International (LRI) 49-38, Mt Glory edged out Young Hearts 67-65, NIMS ousted New Summit 66-49 and VS Niketan sneaked past Gyan Niketan in the quarter-finals. Daffodil also made it to the semi-finals in the second Daffodil Cup Inter-school Football after Little Angels School conceded the match. — HNS

Deep Jyoti win

BHAKTAPUR: Deep Jyoti School defeated Nepal Police School (NPS) by six wickets in the COAS Cup Inter-school Cricket here today. Put into bat first, NPS were bundled out for a paltry 44 runs in 16.1 overs with Biswas Poudel scoring 20 runs. Man of the match Lok Bahadur Ghale claimed 6-23 off eight overs for Deep Jyoti. Bibek Khadka took two and Prabin Shrestha one wicket. In reply, Deep Jyoti surpassed the total in 15.4 overs losing four wickets. Manoj Ghale scored 11 for Deep Jyoti. Rabi Adhikari claimed two and Sagar Gautam one wicket for NPS. — HNS

Bartoli upset

Doha: Caroline Wozniacki upset eighth-seeded Marion Bartoli 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday, while fan favorite Sania Mirza pulled out with a cramping leg. Mirza, who enjoys a large fan base in Qatar, had to retire while trailing 3-2 in the third set against Olga Govortsova of Belarus. In other second-round match, Vera Zvonareva beat Francesca Schiavone 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
