Stosur withdraws
MELBOURNE: Australian Samantha Stosur has withdrawn from January’s Australian tennis open because she is not fit enough to play, she said on Monday. Stosur, 23, the top-ranked Australian in world tennis, said she only resumed training three weeks ago after battling viral illnesses throughout 2007, and that she was not ready for the Australian Open — the first grand slam tournament of the year — and other local events. Craig Tiley, director of the January 14-27 Australian Open, expressed disappointment for Stosur. — AP
England fined
DUBAI: England was fined for maintaining a slow over rate during its drawn Test against Sri Lanka that finished on Sunday. The International Cricket Council said that the fines were imposed after England was ruled to be four overs short of its target in the third and final Test of the series. England captain Michael Vaughan was fined 40 per cent of his match fee, and the rest of his team was fined 20 per cent. The ICC’s decision is final and binding. Sri Lanka won the series 1-0. — AP
