Karki, Adhikari win U-16 titles
LALITPUR: Ramesh Karki and Sarita Adhikari won the U-16 titles here at the sixth Jayakar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday. Karki eased past Sonam Punsuk 6-3, 6-2 in the boys’ section and Adhikari defeated Sagun Thapa 6-1, 6-2 in the girls’ section
final. Sandesh Singh Rathaur claimed the U-12 boys’ title with a 8-7 win over Anchal Thapa. In all, 136 players participated for eight championship titles. The tournament was organised by Man-Jayakar Tennis Academy. — HNS
Bista honoured
KATHMANDU: Sports Fellowship Nepal honoured taekwondo ace Deepak Bista for his feat of qualifying for the 2008 Olympics. Former Minister for Education and Sports Sharad Singh Bhandari handed over Rs 10,000 and a letter of appreciation to Bista at a ceremony organised to celebrate Christmas on Saturday. Bista qualified for the Beijing Olympics after finishing third at the WTF Asian Qualifying Tournament last month. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Laboratory Higher Secondary School is organising the first
Valleywide Twenty20 Inter-college Cricket Tournament at the Lab School grounds from Sunday.
In all, eight college teams — Gillettee, Cosmopolitan, Lab, Bernhardt, Nightingale, National Campus, Little Angels’ and DAV — are taking part in the four-day knock out tournament. Gillettee will play Cosmo Politan while Nightingale will take on National Campus in the inaugural day matches. — HNS
Fr Moran Cup
LALITPUR: Vidhya Sagar, Puspanjali and Machhapuchhre made winning starts at the 12th Fr Moran Memorial Inter-school Invitational Football Tournament on Saturday. Vidhya Sagar crushed Ideal Model 7-0, Puspanjali edged Dolphin 1-0 and Machhapuchhre beat Nalanda 1-0. In total, 14 teams are participating in the tournament. — HNS
Lagankhel win
KATHMANDU: Lagankhel Dojo claimed the team championship with eight gold, five silver and 16 bronze medals at the third BP Memorial Valleywide Karate and Kickboxing Tournament on Saturday. Chapagaun Dojo ended up runner up with four gold, three silver and 12 bronze medals. Mukunda Shrestha and Sabnam Gurung were adjudged the best players in karate. Likewise, Mahesh Maharjan and Maya Lama were declared the best players in kickboxing. — HNS
Bagmati first
KATHMANDU: Bagmati claimed the team championship at the Manmohan Memorial National Taekwondo (ITF) Championship with 18 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals. Nara-yani Zone came second with three gold, two silver and three bronze medals, while Bheri came third with two gold, two silver and one bronze. Anup KC and Kusum Thapa were declared the best male and female players of the event and won $100 each. Toran Bhandari and Ashma Shrestha were adjudged the best junior players. In all, 299 players took part in the tournament. — HNS
