Judo team departs

KATHMANDU: A five-member Nepali judo team on Tuesday left for Taiwan to take part in the Asian Judo Championship to be held in Taipei from May 23-24. The 10th South Asian Games participant Deepak Shrestha will take part in the 73kg section, while the Colombo Games bronze medallist and first South Asian Judo Championship silver medallist Radha Devi Rai is scheduled to fight in 52kg category. The players were selected as per their performance in the fifth National Games held in Kathmandu from April 6-12. Dharma Kumar Shrestha (coach), Usha Basnet (manager) and Surya Narayan Shrestha (referee) are the other members in the team. Clinton in semis

KATHMANDU: Hosts Clinton (Basundhara), Valley Public, Deep Jyoti and Trungram International Academy (TIA) entered the girls’ section semi-finals of the first Clinton International Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament here on Tuesday. Clinton defeated Greenland 22-14 riding on 11 points each from Rima Karki and Srijana Giri, while Samikshin Bista netted 18 points as Valley Public thrashed Reliance 30-4. Also, Deep Jyoti beat Gillette 24-15, while TIA earned walk over from Neighbourhood. In boys’ section, Golden Peak beat Greenland 35-31, Kathmandu Valley beat Deep Jyoti 38-20, Gyan Niketan beat Triyog 43-35 and TIA beat Loyalty 25-18 to advance to the last four. — HNS
