KATHMANDU: Valley Public and Gillette School advanced to the final of the first Golden Peak Inter-school Junior Boys’ Basketball Tournament here on Tuesday. Valley Public defeated Trungram International Academy (TIA) 43-29 in the first semi-final of the day. Biraj Rana scored a match-winning 32 points for Valley Public. In the second semi-final, Gillette sneaked past Greenland 37-33. Kapil Bun netted 15 points for Gillette. TIA and Greenland will play for the third-place before the final match on Wednesday. — HNS
U-19 basketball
KATHMANDU: Wilson Academy edged past Gyanodaya 71-63 to enter the quarter-final of the Mohan Pradhan Memorial U-19 Basketball Tournament at the Godavari Alumni Association court on Tuesday. Chaduddhin Singh of Gyanodaya netted the highest 27 points of the match while Navaraj Dahal scored 26 for the Wilson. In other matches, Bikram scored 20 as Prime College thrashed Mangal School 66-31 and Rhododendron International Boarding School (RIBS) outscored Orient 83-19 riding on Robin Khatri’s 23 points. In the last match, Lincoln crushed National Integrated College 91-21. S Robertson scored 32 points for Lincoln. — HNS
Kanoute extends deal
SEVILLA: Frederic Kanoute signed a one-year contract extension with Sevilla on Monday. Terms of the deal that will keep the Mali international at Sevilla through 2010 were not disclosed. The former Tottenham and West Ham striker was key to Sevilla’s recent 4-0 record in cup finals, including helping the Spanish team win the last two UEFA Cup titles. Kanoute joined Sevilla from White Hart Lane in 2005 and has scored 43 goals in 96 appearances, including 21 in the league last season. — AP
