Malik named captain
Islamabad: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) named Shoaib Malik as its new national team captain on Thursday. “He is the best man to lead the Pakistan team,” PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf said at a news conference in Lahore. Malik replaces Inzamam ul-Haq, who stepped down after Pakistan’s shock early exit from the World Cup and the apparent murder of team coach Bob Woolmer. — AP
Kvasnak dead
PRAGUE: Andrej Kvasnak, a former Czechoslovakia midfielder who played in the 1962 World Cup final, died on Wednesday from lung cancer. He was 70. The former Sparta Prague midfielder scored 13 goals in 47 matches for Czechoslovakia and helped the team reach the 1962 World Cup final in Chile, where it lost to Brazil 3-1. Kvasnak played his last match for Czechoslovakia at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where the team was eliminated in the first round. — AP
Dein quits Arsenal
LONDON: David Dein quit as vice chairman and director of Arsenal on Wednesday after falling out with other members of the board. Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood did not elaborate on the reasons, but the statement referred to American businessman Stan Kroenke’s recent purchase of 11.26 percent of Arsenal. — AP
