KATHMANDU: Sunil Kumar Magar scored the fastest goal so far in the ‘C’ Division League when he netted in the 10th second in Samajik Yuva Club’s 3-2 win over Var City Club. Sunil Kumar Magar doubled the tally in the 11th minute, while Suman Shrestha of Var City conceded an own goal. Raj Kumar Lama and Nandu Khapangi scored for Var City. In the other match, Sri Kumari Club and Sanepa Club played a 3-3 draw. Rukesh Shrestha, Sabin Dura and Nabin Maharjan scored for Kumari, while Bikram Adhikari netted two and Kabin one goal for Sanepa. — HNS
Valleywide Karate
KATHMANDU: Bouddha Dojo won the second Valleywide Shito Ryu Karate and Kick Boxing Tournament with 10 gold medals. Samakhushi Dojo came second with five gold medals. Tok Bahadur Tamang and Chanchala Danawar (Kck Boxing) and Dinesh Magar and Jagriti Pakhrin (Karate) were declared the best fighters of the tournament, organised by Samakhushi Dojo in memory of the Jana Andolan II martyrs. Member of National Sports Council and secretary of Nepal Karate Federation Purendra Bikram Lakhe gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS
Flintoff ruled out
LONDON: England captain Andrew Flintoff has been ruled out for some 12 weeks after being told on Saturday that he needs surgery on his injured left ankle, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced. He will have the operation next week and will miss the three remaining Tests against Pakistan and the five subsequent ODIs against Inzamam-ul-Haq’s side. He must also be a major doubt for the Champions Trophy in India, which starts on October 7. — AFP
Appeals trial begins
ROME: The appeals trial in Italian soccer’s match-fixing scandal began on Saturday with all four clubs involved hoping to have their sentences reduced. Juventus is appealing its demotion to Serie B and the loss of its last two Serie A titles. Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan are also appealing. Verdicts are expected on Monday or Tuesday, in time for the deadline set by UEFA to decide which teams will participate in European competitions this season. — AP
