Hoggard’s fitness bid

CANTERBURY: Matthew Hoggard is to spend time in an oxygen chamber during the next few days as he attempts to get fit to face Pakistan in the first Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday. The paceman had his run threatened after Yorkshire team-mate Tim Bresnan trod on his hand during the warm-up before Saturday’s third day of the four-day clash between England A and Pakistan. Hoggard had to have six stitches inserted into his bowling hand and will use the chamber at a north-west London hospital near Lord’s in a bid to speed his recovery. — AFP

Lippi wants to stay

DUISBURG: Italy coach Marcello Lippi said on Monday that he wanted to remain in his job after his team won the World Cup. “I have never said I will stop. But I have a meeting tomorrow with the Italian Football Federation so we will see,” he said. Lippi said his players had realised they could win the World Cup once they topped their first-round group. “We said ‘We are not going to let this opportunity pass us by’. And once we got into the semi-final we knew everything was possible,” Lippi said. — AFP
