Athletics meet

KATHMANDU: Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) is organising the Open Track and Field Athletics Tournament at the Dasharath Stadium on June 29 to select the players for the Asian Junior Athletics Championships to be held on December 31 in Macau. According to the NAAA release, two Under-20 athletes will be picked up for the championship. The events include 100m, 200m, 800m, 1,500m, 5,00m, high jump, long jump, javelin throw and shot put in both men and women sections. — HNS

Powell wins 200m

KINGSTON: Asafa Powell won the 200 meters in 19.90 seconds at the Jamaican championships on Sunday, matching Wallace Spearmon’s world-best time this year. Hours earlier, Spearmon became the first sprinter this year to break 20 seconds in the 200, finishing in 19.90 in the US championships in Indianapolis. Powell, who shares the world 100 record of 9.77 with American Justin Gatlin, entered the 200 on Sunday with a personal best of 20.06. — AP

Yildirim returns

ISTANBUL: Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim returned as head of Turkey’s richest soccer club on Sunday, just weeks after stepping down and vowing he would never come back. Yildirim resigned in May after Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish league. — AP
