Sharapova pulls out

TORONTO: Maria Sharapova pulled out of the Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament Sunday due to a strained chest muscle. Sharapova, the top seed in the $1.3 million tournament, had hoped she’d be able to play at the Toronto event but after receiving treatment over the weekend she was advised not to hit any balls until Wednesday or Thursday. — AP

Mike Tyson fined

ROME: Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was fined $374 for riding a jet ski too close to shore and without a helmet, police on the island of Capri said. Tyson, who reports have linked to misbehaviour on various other islands up and down Italy’s coast in the last week, entered within the safe distance of 500 metres from shore, said police marshall Capello Tramparulo. — AP
