Uefa cup : Udinese, Galatasaray thru

Udinese, Galatasaray, Standard Liege, FC Twente and Metalist Kharkiv advanced to the UEFA Cup knockout phase on Wednesday.

Udinese became the first Group D team to qualify by beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-1. NEC Nijmegen stopped Spartak Moscow from going through for now by defeating the Russian club 2-1.

Milan Baros’ penalty clinched Galatasaray’s passage with a 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin in Group B, where Edmar’s 88th-minute goal gave Metalist the same scoreline against Olympiacos. Manchester City, who had already qualified, held Paris Saint-Germain to 0-0 and will be joined in the last 32 by Twente, who edged Schalke 2-1.

Standard Liege progressed from Group C by beating Sampdoria 3-0, and Sevilla moved a step closer to joining them by beating Partizan Belgrade by the same score. CSKA Moscow, and Saint Etienne also qualified last week.

Udinese took just five minutes to take the lead against Zagreb, with Fabio Quagliarella scoring from close range. It took the Serie A side until the 78th to extend their lead, when Christian Obodo redirected a cross from Simone Pepe. Zagreb captain Igor Biscan pulled one back in stoppage time. Udinese lead Group D with nine points. Tottenham is next with six points.

Baros converted a penalty in the 69th for Galatasaray. Galatasaray improved to nine points in Group B. Hertha remained on two points from three games. Robbie Wielaert put Twente ahead in the third minute before Kenneth Perez doubled the lead in the 55th. Gerald Asamoah scored for Schalke in the 76th. Manchester City lead Group A with seven points. Twente have six heading into their last group game at PSG. Schalke are third with four points.
