Unbeaten Kathmandu win championship

Kathmandu, March 6:

Kathmandu remained unbeaten throughout the league and won the Wai Wai Regional Selection Cricket Tournament organised by Region No 3 here today.

Kathmandu earned an unassailable lead in the tournament with three wins. Lalitpur and Nuwakot have three points each, while Bhaktapur are yet to open their accounts. On Friday, Kathmandu defeated Bhaktapur by 10 wickets and Lalitpur beat Nuwakot by four wickets.

Electing to bat first at the Birendra Sainik grounds, Bhaktapur were bowled out for a paltry 85 runs in 33.2 overs and Kathmandu openers Indra Kamal Manandhar and Bijay Gautam finished off the match in 13.5 overs. Manandhar scored run-a-ball 44 hitting seven fours, while Gautam struck two fours in his 39-ball 21. Rabin Joshi top scored for Bhaktapur with 21 runs, while John Joshi (19) and Rabin Shakya (14) were the only other batsmen who scored in double digits. Gyanendra Malla took 4-18 off eight overs for Kathmandu and was ably supported by man of the match Bijay Gautam (3-8) and Raman Shrestha (2-4).

At TU Stadium, Nuwakot were all out for 125 in 37.4 overs and Lalitpur overcame the target losing six wickets in 30 overs. Rom Shrestha top scored for Nuwakot with 38 off 58 balls that included six fours. Ritesh Singh scored 27 and Rajesh Shestha remained unbeaten on 11.

Nasim Akhtar and Jeevan Bhattarai took three wickets for Lalitpur. In Lalitpur’s run chase, Abdul Khan Kashi scored 30 off 49 hitting two fours. Ramesh Chand and Sandeep Yadav added 26 each. Yadav hit a six and four boundaries in his 29-ball innings while Chand struck three fours.
