Unbeaten Khatri bags gold medal

Olympian judoka Phupu Lhamu Khatri of Tribhuvan Army Club remained unbeaten on her way to winning the women’s 63kg weight category gold medal in the seventh National Games here in Dhulabari today.

In the round-robin league contest, the 12th South Asian Games gold medallist Khatri won all the matches to finish first, while Nepal Police Club’s Nisha Chaudhary won silver and Far-western’s Shekha Shrestha and Dil Kumari Sinjali of Eastern Region bagged bronze.

In women’s 44kg, Sonu Bhatta of Central Region bagged gold, while Som Maya Tamang of Western Region took silver. Bimala Mahat of Far-western and Sumitra Rai of TAC were joint third. Also, the 12th SA Games silver medal winning judoka Lila Adhikari of TAC bagged the 52kg weight category gold medal finishing ahead of Dil Kumari Chhantyal of NPC, while Poonam Shrestha of TAC finished first in 78kg section, while Babita Chaudhary of Eastern Region came second.

In men’s category, Tilak Bahadur Deuja of TAC won the 50kg section gold medal, while Manoj Acharya of Central claimed silver. TAC’s Sudip Kumar Bohara bagged the 60kg weight category gold ahead of Umesh Magar of NPC. Sanchit Dangol of NPC won 73kg section gold, while Ram Bhakta Tamang of Central came second, while Shree Ram Makaju of NPC claimed the 90kg gold finishing ahead of Central’s Sanjay Maharjan. Likewise, Rajan Joshi of NPC beat TAC’s Kaluman Tamang in the 100kg weight category.

A total of nine gold medals were on offer on the second straight day, while players will fight for three gold medals on Monday. Youth and Sports Minister Daljit Sripaili, National Sports Council Vice-president Lama Tendi Sherpa and Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya handed over the prizes to the winners.
