Violence in Mostar

SARAJEVO: A man was seriously wounded by gunshots and six policemen were injured in clashes on Wednesday between Croat football fans and Muslims in an ethnically divided Bosnian town, police said. The incident occurred in Mostar after Croatia’s 1-0 loss to Brazil. The violence flared after a number of Bosnian Croat fans gathered in Mostar and started smashing cars and the windows of surrounding buildings.

More water promised

BERLIN: FIFA have promised to give the 32 teams at the World Cup more opportunity to take in fluids to combat the searing heat sweeping through Germany. “We will make more water available to the teams,” FIFA media director Markus Siegler said. England were furious at the regulations that prevented their players drinking water during breaks in their 1-0 group win over Paraguay and complained to FIFA.

Applause for Croats

ZAGREB: The Croatian press on Wedne-sday hailed its footballers for their “bravery” against Brazil after a 1-0 loss. “We were brave,” read one headline. “We are proud of you,” said another, while a third one urged the players to “Keep their heads up!”. “Regardless of the narrow loss, Croatia opened rather well,” said the Jutarnji List. “A defeat to be proud off: Now we we know that we are ready and powerful,” said Sportske Novosti.
