Yong-Eun tames Tiger, wins PGA Championship

CHASKA: The aura of invincibility Tiger Woods has enjoyed in the final round of major golf tournaments was shattered, perhaps for all time, by humble Yang Yong-Eun at the 91st PGA Championship.

The 37-year-old South Korean became Asia’s first major champion on Sunday with a three-stroke victory over world No 1 Woods, outdueling the 14-time major winner down the stretch in a head-to-head battle for a historic triumph. Woods had been 14-for-14 in winning majors when leading after 54 holes and 37-1 in all tournaments for his career when alone in the lead entering the final round.

But Yang, ranked 110th in the world, snapped the streak and made this the first year since 2004 in which Woods, Yang’s final round playing partner, did not win a major. Yang began the day two strokes off the pace, pulled even on the front nine and took a one-stroke lead over Woods with an eagle chip-in at the 14th. Both took bogey at 17 and Woods missed a birdie chip. Yang’s six-foot birdie at the 18th clinched the title.

The pressure of playing alongside Woods has withered many of the game’s greats and none had rallied past him in the final round of a major until Yang.
