KATHMANDU
Handigaun's Chokte Narayan Jatra breaks all traditional rules with three unique, wheel-less khats designed upside down-featuring downward-pointing pinnacles (gajurs) while the deities sit exposed at the very top.
Among many local legends, one story says it began to appease Lord Narayan after an woman insulted him in human form. Enraged, the deity cursed her to a state of eternal pregnancy, trapping her in grueling, non-stop labor contractions for 12 consecutive years. Desperate to end her biological torment, the villagers promised the god an unprecedented, gravity-defying festival if he showed mercy.
Rooted in the ancient settlements of Andipring and Andigram, this unique tradition keeps Newar heritage alive on the day after Kojagrat Purnima.
