23 killed in bus mishap

Dehradun, July 9:

At least 23 people were killed and 25 injured today when a crowded bus fell into a fast-flowing river in India’s northern hill state of Uttaranchal, an official said.

The accident occurred when the bus driver lost control and skidded off the road into a Ganges River gorge near the temple town of Rishikesh, 270 km north of New Delhi.

A senior official supervising the rescue operations said 23 bodies have been recovered.

The injured have been admitted to local hospitals, he said.
