Yangon, May 15:

Two sons of former Prime Minister Gen Khin Nyunt, have gone on trial at special tribunals inside Myanmar’s notorious Insein prison, legal sources said.

The sons, Lt Col Zaw Naing Oo and Dr Ye Naing Win, were being charged with economic crimes, including illegal possession of foreign exchange and violation of import-export laws, sources said late yesterday,. The trial began on Thursday.

Khin Nyunt, who also headed the military intelligence apparatus, was removed from power last October, accused of insubordination and responsibility for a major corruption scandal involving his subordinates. Thirty-eight military intelligence officers close to Khin Nyunt were given long prison terms in April.

Khin Nyunt’s two sons and his son-in-law were arrested soon after his ouster.
