KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 17
Student activists from students' unions such as All India Students Association (AISA) and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) protested against the arrest of environment activist Disha Ravi and demanded her release in the capital city of India.
Following this, the Indian police detained a dozen protesters trying to march to the Parliament building in New Delhi.
According to a report from Associated Press, a heavy police presence overpowered about 40 protesters, including a dozen who were taken away in a bus. The protesters were shouting "Free Disha Ravi" and "Shame on Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah" as they tried to break police barricades outside the office of NSUI.
The report said that it was not immediately clear whether the police were going to formally arrest them or free them later today.
Neeraj Kundan, the NSUI president, told Associated Press that the protest was against the government misusing a sedition law and arresting activists expressing support to the farmers.
Similar protest was staged on Tuesday by students from AISA at Delhi Police headquarters in New Delhi, where they protested with placards and slogans of 'Inquilab Zindabad' (Long Live the Revolution) and 'Disha Ravi ko riha karo' (Free Disha Ravi).
The 21-year-old activist Disha Ravi was arrested on February 15 from Bengaluru "in connection with the formulation and dissemination of the Toolkit document, in the ongoing farmers' protest", as reported by Asian News International.
