TEHRAN:A crackdown on Iranian reformists and supporters of defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi intensified on Wednesday with dozens more detained in Tehran and outside the capital.

A Mousavi campaigner, sociologist Hamid Reza Jalaipour, was arrested at his home but released hours later, he told AFP.

Saeed Laylaz, a political and economic analyst was also arrested on Wednesday in Tehran, a family member said. Both of them are also prominent journalists.

Jalaipour said he was released but his son Mohommad Reza, a leading member of Mousavi's campaign, was arrested at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport while on his way to London.

"My son studies at Oxford University and he was leaving for London with his wife. He was arrested by men in plainclothes at the airport," he said.

Since Sunday, at least 88 people have been arrested in Iran's northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi, the deputy governor general for security affairs, Amirollah Shamaghdari, told ISNA news agency.

Of them 35 were arrested in a rally in Mashhad, the provincial capital, and another 53 who had "criminal records" were detained on Monday.

Seven people were also arrested on Tuesday in the northern province of Zanjan, a local official said.

Since the results of Friday's poll were announced, Iranian authorities have detained scores of reformist leaders and journalists following hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial re-election.

His victory has triggered violent protests in Tehran.

Reformist former interior ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani and three journalists working for the reformist press have also been arrested, Etemad Melli newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Several political activists were also detained during protests in the northwestern city of Tabriz on Monday, the report said.

Intelligence Minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie said on Tuesday that security forces had arrested 26 "masterminds" of the post-election unrest sweeping Tehran.

Mousavi supporters have ignored a ban on holding public protests and staged massive marches in the capital. At least seven people have been killed in clashes and hundreds of people have been arrested around the country.
