An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 hit northeast of Tokyo on Wednesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, but there were no were immediate reports of damage.

The epicentre was in the south of Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, the agency said, adding that a tsunami warning had not been issued.
