Malawi prez wins re-election

BLANTYRE: Malawi leader Bingu wa Mutharika won a second term in presidential polls with more than double the votes of his nearest rival, official results in the southern African country showed Friday.

"I declare Bingu wa Mutharika, president of the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party), winner of 2009 presidential elections," announced electoral commission chairperson Anastacia Msosa.

Mutharika won 2,730,630 of the votes, notching up a comfortable win over main opposition candidate John Tembo who received 1,270,057 of the ballots cast.
