Myanmar's democracy leader to contest November election

THANLYIN: Myanmar's democracy leader and lawmaker Aung San Suu Kyi has registered for a seat in November elections.

Suu Kyi submitted her papers at Thanlyin township's Election Commission office on Wednesday to run in the Kawhmu constituency, a southern Yangon district she represented during the 2012 by-election.

The general election will be held on Nov. 8 and political parties have until Aug. 8 to submit their candidates.

The Nobel peace laureate announced that her party will contest the election in an effort to challenge the ruling military-backed party. Her party will announce its candidates' list later Wednesday.

Suu Kyi is still unable to run for presidency after lawmakers recently turned down efforts to amend the constitution.
