Poll duty cops killed
PATNA:
Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed and half a dozen injured when a truck carrying them for polling duty overturned near Pilganj in Patna district. According to police sources, the men were returning from polling duty in Pilganj and were headed for duty in Bagaha when the incident occurred on Thursday night. — HNS
Death for drug pedlar
COLOMBO:
A Sri Lankan man was sentenced to death for possessing 4.64 grams of heroin, following a five-year trial, a news report said on Friday. Judge Sunil Rakapakse of the Colombo High Court said he imposed the death penalty against Lakshman Jayaweera because of his eight previous convictions for possessing heroin and because he sold the drug, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported. — AP
Top Afghan cop killed
KANDAHAR:
A car bomb exploded near a mosque in southern Afghanistan, killing a deputy provincial police chief and one of his bodyguards, officials said on Friday. In other violence, an intelligence agent was killed while riding his bicycle home when a roadside bomb exploded in eastern Kunar province, said provincial Gov Assadullah Wafa. Kunar has been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting between Talmban rebels and US-led coalition forces. — AP
