Amita Sen, 92, mother of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and a direct associate of world poet Rabindranath Tagore, has passed away. Amita Sen was suffering from respiratory problems. Her celebrated son was in a small village in Italy and would be able to reach Santiniketan only Wednesday. — HNS

Four killed in Kashmir

SRINAGAR:

Suspected Islamic militants raided a remote village in Kashmir on Monday and killed three residents, while a gunfight between security forces and rebels elsewhere in the region left one rebel dead, police said. Suspected ultras attacked the Uransera village, where they targeted two Muslim families and killed three family members, said a local police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity. — AP
