Fire kills 14 in UP

LUCKNOW: Fourteen people, including 10 children, died in fire accidents in several villages of Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday. Three women and nine children were burnt alive in a blaze in Sujan Tanda village of Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 140 km from here on Tuesday. — HNS

Malik advised rest

ISLAMABAD: Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yasin Malik, who is visiting Pakistan along with Hurriyat leaders, has been advised complete rest after he collapsed due to fatigue, the Dawn daily reported on Wednesday. The nine-member delegation of separatist leaders from Jammu and Kashmir on a two-week visit to Pakistani Kashmir and Pakistan were attending a lunch hosted here on Tuesday by the Senate Foreign Relations committee when Malik collapsed. — HNS

Building collapse

BEIJING: At least 12 people were buried when a building under construction collapsed on Wednesday in southeastern China’s Fujian province, state press reported. The accident occurred in Jian’ou city following a nearby mountain landslide, Xinhua news agency said. Rescue work was under way, the report said. No other details were immediately available. — AFP

Cop killed in Aceh

BANDA ACEH: Separatist rebels have shot dead a policeman in the latest violence in Indonesia’s tsunami-battered Aceh province, police said Wednesday. Dapot Silitonga was driving when four people stopped him in the Alue Kumba area of East Aceh on Tuesday night, police said. — AFP
