Talks on Sir Creek

Islamabad: Pakistan and India on Saturday put forward their respective proposals to resolve the Sir Creek estuary dispute. A Pakistani official said: “Both sides exchanged some proposals.” Rear Admiral Ahsanul Haq, Pakistan’s additional secretary of defence, led his country at the talks while Surveyor-General Maj Gen Gopal Rao led the Indian team. — HNS

31 hurt in J&K unrest

SRINAGAR: A remote controlled car bomb on Saturday toppled a paramilitary truck as it drove through a village in Kashmir, and a grenade exploded in a separate attack, left 31 people injured, police said. Eleven civilians and seven soldiers were injured when a bomb placed in a car exploded at Lazbal village. Hours later, suspected rebels hurled a grenade at a paramilitary patrol vehicle but missed, injuring 13 civilians. — AP

Apology demanded

BEIJING: More than 100 relatives of people killed in the Tiananmen massacre have called on the government to apologise as the 16th anniversary of the tragedy approaches. In an open letter by 125 relatives to President Hu Jintao, the Tiananmen Mothers group said the government’s accusations against Japan for failing to acknowledge its World War II atrocities were meaningless because it has not apologised for its own transgressions. — AFP

Bangla cinema blast

DHAKA: One man was wounded when a crude pipe bomb exploded in a cinema in Bangladesh district of Sirajganj, police said on Saturday. “A man in the front row of the Mumtaj cinema hall was injured in his leg,” a police sub-inspector said. The victim’s leg may have to be amputated. No one has been arrested. — AFP

Woman beaten up

BHUBANESWAR: A 45-year-old woman was beaten up, stripped, tied to a pillar and left in that state for an hour by her neighbour who wanted to teach her a lesson, police in Orissa said on Saturday. At least 11 people have been arrested. Jambubati Devi, a resident of Bheden village, dragged Urmila Senapati out of her home, tied her to a pillar, beat her and left her there after stripping her naked. — HNS
