BEIJING: Heavy snowfall in a remote mountainous part of southwestern Tibet claimed the life of at least one person and left 2,481 injured, mostly with frostbite, state media reported on Sunday. The massive snowfall also killed 24,000 head of livestock in 10 counties where animal husbandry forms an essential part of the local economy, Xinhua news agency reported. — AFP

One shot dead in Thailand:

BANGKOK: One man was shot dead and another seriously injured on Sunday in two shootings that police blamed on Islamic separatists in mainly Muslim southern Thailand. Unknown attackers shot and killed 49-year-old Sueman Maming in Narathiwat province’s Rangae district, police said. — AFP

Five die as boat sinks:

TAIPEI: Five Chinese sailors were killed when their fishing boat sank off Taiwan and the vessel’s missing Taiwanese skipper and another sailor were also feared to have died, the coast guard said on Sunday. — AFP

COLOMBO: Seven soldiers were injured when an old grenade accidentally exploded during a training session in eastern Sri Lanka. The explosion took place at an army garrison in Trincomalee on Saturday, said a military spokesman. — AP
