Landmine kills four

Kabul: Four civilians were killed as a mine struck their car outside Afghan capital Kabul on Monday, a senior police official said. “It was around 9 am when a car ran over a mine left over from the past wars,” he added. The incident took place in Charasiab district of Kabul province, some 25 km south of the Afghan capital, he said. In another explosion on Sunday, which was described as a Taliban suicide attack, in Paghman district, 20 km west of Kabul, 10 people including one NATO soldier and nine civilians were killed. —Xinhua

Quake shakes Delhi

NEW DELHI: A “light” earthquake rocked the Indian capital before dawn on Monday, sending residents running outside for safety, the weather office and correspondents said. The epicentre of the quake, which hit 4.3 on the Richter scale, was at nearby Bahadurgarh along the capital territory’s border with Haryana, said metereological department official RC Bhasin. “The earthquake occurred at 4.42 am on Monday. It was of light intensity so we don’t expect much damage,” Bhasin said. — AFP

Trawler capsizes

DHAKA: Five people died and up to 50 were feared missing after a fishing boat from Myanmar capsized near Bangladesh’s St Martin’s island, police said on Monday. “We have found five bodies,” local police chief Jashim Uddin told AFP. He said one of the survivors told police there were around 75 people on board. Ten were Bangladeshis while the rest were from neighbouring Myanmar. The survivor said the boat had been fishing in the Bay of Bengal and was on its way to Thailand. — AFP

LTTE men kill farmers

COLOMBO: Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels fatally shot four ethnic Sinhalese rice farmers in their paddies in northern Sri Lanka on Monday, while soldiers killed five insurgents in separate gunbattles, the military said. The gunshot-riddled bodies of the farmers, three men and a woman, were discovered near the farming village of Mahavilachchiya in the Anuradhapura district just south of rebel-controlled territory in the north, the military said in a statement. Separately, army troops and guerrillas fought two gunbattles in Omanthai and Periyathampanai in the northern district of Vavuniya early Monday, killing five rebels. — AP

Dam burst kills 10

BEIJING: Ten people were killed and 17 injured when a dam surrounding an industrial sludge pond burst, swamping a village in China with slime and debris, state press said Monday. Up to 33 houses were destroyed when industrial waste products poured into the village in northeastern Liaoning province on Sunday morning. Three villagers remain missing. — AFP
