Pilgrims on rampage

New Delhi: Police used batons and fired in the air to disperse hundreds of Kanwarias who went on a rampage in northern India on Tuesday after three of them were run over and killed by a truck. At least 50 Kanwarias and 15 police officers were wounded. Kanwarias are young men performing a ritual pilgrimage in which they walk to the Ganges river to take its sacred waters back to temples in their hometowns. — AP

4 killed in Thai south

YALA: Thai authorities arrested 45 suspected insurgents on Tuesday as they stepped up crackdown on separatists in Muslim-majority provinces, while four people were killed in fresh attacks. Two soldiers were killed and two wounded in a roadside bombing in Pattani province on Tuesday. In Yala province, two Muslims, including an imam, were shot dead.— AFP

Train, engine collide

Kanpur: At least 12 persons were injured when the Howrah-bound Jodhpur-Howrah Express rammed into a stationary engine at a railway station here on Tuesday. The collision caused severe damage to the engine and three bogies that got derailed. — HNS
