YANGON: Thailand’s Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont made a one-day trip to Myanmar on Thursday for talks with leaders of Myanmar’s military junta. Surayud met junta chief Senior Gen Than Shwe and was scheduled to hold talks with his counterpart, Gen Soe Win. — AP

Eight killed in blast

JAKARTA: Rescuers said eight people were killed and up to four were missing on Thursday after an underground gas pipeline exploded near a gas well spewing mud in Indonesia. The blast shot flames 500 metres into the night sky and burst a dyke built to contain hot mud which had inundated East Java’s Sidoarjo district. — AFP
