Turkey eyes role for EU council in post-coup prosecutions: Germany

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will travel to Strasbourg next week to discuss a possible role for the European Council in preparing post-coup prosecutions, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Saturday.

Steinmeier told reporters that Germany stood by Turkey after the coup and had high respect for the Turkish people who rose up to put down the putsch attempt. He also acknowledged that German statements had perhaps lacked the empathy that Ankara expected.

The European Union's top diplomat Federica Mogherini said Turkey had agreed to continue to implement its migrant deal with the European Union, and both sides would continue to work on the visa liberalisation issue.
