Victim of fatal shooting in US was Bhutanese refugee resettled from Nepal

ROCHESTER: Relatives and co-workers of a man fatally shot in Rochester last weekend say he was a Bhutanese refugee of Nepali origin and the father of seven children.

Family members say 38-year-old Jit Magar (Jit Mongar) arrived in the US a few years ago and was working at an electronics recycling company in Brockport to support his family, which includes his wife and their seven children under 18.

Relatives say Magar had stopped at a store on Lake Avenue late Sunday night when he was approached by a group and shot as he got into his car. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police have released few details. Officials say no suspects are in custody as the investigation continues.

An estimated 2,300 Bhutanese refugees, who were earlier taking shelter in Nepal, have resettled in Rochester in recent years.
