US missile attack

MIRANSHAH: Missiles from a US drone slammed into a car killing three militants on Friday, the second such strike in two days in Pakistan’s tribal region of North Waziristan. The northwest, rife with Islamist extremist networks, has been the focus of a hail of bombings in the past month by US spy planes, as Washington targets militant groups it says Pakistan is struggling to tackle. The morning attack by a drone aircraft struck a vehicle carrying suspected militants in Ghundikala village, 15 km east of Miranshah close to the Afghan border. It is also not clear whether any high value target was present in the area when the attack took place.

Tainted dairy shut

BEIJING: A Chinese dairy shut down during the 2008 tainted milk scandal has been closed again after tests found some of its products contained the same toxic chemical, state media reported on Friday. Shanghai Panda Dairy was shuttered and three executives arrested on Thursday after an investigation found eight batches of its powdered milk and condensed milk had “illegally high” levels of melamine. Panda Dairy was put on a “black list” during the 2008 scandal after its products were found to have the second-highest levels of melamine in the nation, the report said. The now bankrupt Sanlu Group had the highest.

Anti-porn crackdown

Beijing: China arrested more than 5,000 people in a crackdown on Internet pornography in 2009, officials said, vowing tougher online policing in the new year as a key element of “state security”. China maintains strict censorship of the Internet to curb what the government deems to be unhealthy content including porn and violence — an effort that has become known as the “Great Firewall of China”.
