Over 100 VAW cases reported every month

KATHMANDU: Women and Rehabilitation Centre today said it has been recording more than 100 cases every month.

According to its recent data, a total of 114 cases of Violence Against Women (VAW) were recorded in the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June). Similarly, the number of VAW cases were 120 in the month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May).

A press statement issued by WOREC said that of the total 114 cases in Jestha, 24 cases were collected from different newspapers and 90 cases were documented by the organisations from all development regions.

According to WOREC, 63 per cent of women were victims of domestic violence (sexual abuse, beating, mental torture, polygamy, dowry), four per cent were attempted rape, 8 per cent were subjected to rape, one per cent gang rape, 6 per cent murder, 11 per cent social violence such as verbal abuses and seven per cent suffered from other types of violence.

It said the eastern development region has the highest cases of VAW with 73 followed by mid-western region (20), central region (11), far-western region (8) and western region (2).

WOREC said 51 per cent of the perpetrators were husband in relationship while family members accounted for eight per cent, neighbours 21 per cent and boyfriends four per cent.
