Tension at two hospitals after death of patients

Kathmandu, September 13

Tension ran high in two hospitals here today following the death of patients after treatment.

Irate relatives of the deceased patients staged demonstrations outside the hospitals and accused the doctors involved in treatment of negligence. Kamala Bhattarai, 40, of Butwal died at around 1:30pm at Om Hospital. She had undergone a nose surgery at the hospital on Saturday.

Similarly, a four-month-old child died this morning at Bir Hospital. He had undergone neurosurgery three days ago.

“Bhattarai’s urination had stopped and she was admitted to the intensive care unit after a dramatic fall in blood pressure. She died of septicemia,” said Dr Jageshwor Gautam, director at Om Hospital.

Meanwhile, the deceased child’s kin at Bir Hospital accused the doctors of negligence and demanded investigation. They also accused doctors and health workers at the hospital of misbehaving with them.

“We have already sent a letter to the Ministry of Health requesting it to form a probe committee to investigate the death,” said  Dr Bhupendra Basnet, director at Bir Hospital.

Similarly, Om Hospital has also requested the Ministry of Health to form a probe committee. The heath ministry has formed a probe committee headed by Dr Binod Man Shrestha to investigate the deaths.

Dr Bikash Devkota, one of the members of the probe committee,said the committee would come up with its report within three to four days.
