'Cabinet to fix dates for local level elections Monday'

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's chief political advisor Chakrapani Khanal today informed that dates of the local level elections would be announced on Monday.

Referring to the meeting between major ruling coalition partners CPN Maoist Centre and Nepali Congress at the PM's residence this morning, Khanal said the Cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow would announce the dates.

"Preparations for the elections have been completed. In coordination with the Election Commission and the security bodies, the elections would be held within the third week of May," Khanal added.

Khanal was speaking with journalists at an interaction held in the Capital this afternoon.

He also said the government would try to incorporate Madhesi parties' demands and even reconsider restructuring the local bodies on the basis of the population density.

Khanal, however, said that the elections would be held even if Madhes parties were not on board the process.

Meanwhile, Nepal Sadbhawana Party Chairman Anil Kumar Jha stated that the government wanted to create a chaos if it was really announcing the dates tomorrow.

"If the government stays stubborn and announces the dates, we will be compelled to resort to protests. We are ready to sacrifice ourselves, but will not allow elections in Madhes," Jha stressed.

He also claimed the Kathmandu-Madhes relations would also be tarnished if elections were to be held without the Madhes' consent.

The Madhes-based parties have been demanding a Constitution amendment before the announcement of the dates.
