Headteacher gunned down, policeman injured

Sunsari, September 20

Unidentified gunmen shot to death Khursid Alam of Ramnagar Bhutaha in Harinagara Rural Municipality today.

The fifty-one-year-old owner and principal of local Reyan National Public School, was attacked by four men riding two motorbikes bearing Indian number plates.

Alam was heading home riding pillion on his kin Amin Ansari’s bike when he was shot at by the gunmen. “We were riding home when we were flanked by two motorbikes who came abreast of us and fired shots at him,” said Amin. Being hit in the head and chest, Alam died on the spot, said police.

Meanwhile, a policeman was also shot at and injured by the gunmen. Constable Shivalal Poudel, who had tried to follow the gunmen, was injured after receiving bullets in his thigh and waist. He is being treated at Dharan–based BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences in Sunsari.

According to Dr Devindra Gautam, who is involved in the treatment of the injured cop, Poudel is out of danger. Alam was also the then CPN-UML Sunsari district adviser. The incident site is around 3km away from the Nepal-India border.

Meanwhile, locals have accused the police of not acting promptly upon being informed about the incident. “We informed the Armed Police Force on the border immediately after the incident, but as no one came the gunmen fled to India via the route which was not far from the APF base,” the locals said. They chanted slogans against the administration keeping the body on the road. Tyres were also burnt at different places.

On his part, Chief District Officer Prem Prakash Upreti of Sunsari said security around the incident site had been ramped up and security personnel mobilised after the incident.
