RPP dilemma
KATHMANDU: It is not clear yet whether the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, which has 35 seats in the Parliament, will support the constitution amendment bill or not. RPP lawmaker Ram Kumar Subba said there were more than a dozen lawmakers within his party who did not want to support the bill in its current form. “We cannot support the contents of language, citizenship and provincial boundaries in the bill.” He said there were lawmakers in the ruling CPN-Maoist Centre and the Nepali Congress who also supported the RPP lawmakers’ stance.
RPP’s Chief Whip Dilnath Giri said there were some lawmakers who were against the bill but would vote for it if the parliamentary party issued a whip to party lawmakers.
“I am confident that no lawmakers will dare to vote against the party’s whip. If they do, they will be sacked and they will lose their seats in the Parliament,” he added.
Giri added that the three major parties that united to promulgate the constitution should also join hands to implement it. He said the ruling parties needed to take all stakeholders, including the CPN-UML, on board. “If there is a need to revise the bill then we should discuss that option and revise it to satisfy all sides, including the CPN-UML,” he added.
