Gaurika Singh sets new national record in World Championship

KATHMANDU: Nepal's Gaurika Singh bettered her own national record in the women's  100 metres backstroke in the 16th FINA World Championship at Kazan, Russia, on Monday.

The 12-year-old finished first in the heat with the timing of 1:08.12 seconds. She, however, failed to qualify for the semi-final as she finished 58th among 66 swimmers.

Singh is the first Nepali swimmer to finish first in the heats in all international swimming championships.

Earlier, Singh had held the national record with the timing of 1:13.13 seconds during the 20th National Open Swimming Championships at the Satdobato Swimming Complex.

Singh will now compete in 100 metres freestyle.
