Gurung sets new record of 14 golds

KATHMANDU: Sirish Gurung of Tribhuvan Army Club won 14 gold medals in the fifth Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) Cup at the International Sports Complex pool in Lalitpur.

Gurung, who had won seven gold medals on the opening day (Thursday) with one national record, added seven more on the final day (Friday) to finish the tournament with 14 golds. He also broke the record of 12 gold medals in a single meet held by Karishma Karki in fifth National Games in 2010. Out of the 15 events featured in the championship, Gurung won gold medals in all the 14 events he took part, while Kiran Rai bagged one.

Gurung won the 200m backstroke gold with the timing of 2:39.10, before adding 200m freestyle title in 2:20.48. The Army Club swimmer then won the 100m butterfly in 1:13.72 and bagged the 100m breaststroke gold in 1:15.56. Gurung won the 50m backstroke in 34.07 seconds and added 50m freestyle in 26.90. He also claimed the 400m Individual Medley gold in 6:01.63.

On the opening day, Gurung had won the 400m free (5:00.44), 200m Individual Medley (2:40.91), 200m fly (2:47.47), 100m free (1:00.34), 50m fly (30.13), 100m backstroke (1:15.57) and 200m breaststroke with new national record of 2:42.72.

Alice Shrestha had held the record of 2:44.67 since 2006.
