The looming second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the Kathmandu valley denizens as cases of the infection continue to spike at an alarming rate.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), 1900+ freshly reported cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Kathmandu valley for two consecutive days wherein 1,996 cases were reported in the past 24 hours while on Monday the valley witnessed 1,912 cases.

With the national COVID-19 tally on Tuesday hitting 4, 364 cases of the highly contagious respiratory infection, those reported in the valley make up for almost 46% of the nation-wide infections.

Kathmandu district in particular has been hard-hit by the pandemic as on Tuesday 1,602 new cases were detected in Kathmandu district alone while adjacent districts Bhaktapur and Lalitpur recorded 124 and 240 cases respectively.

Given the fact that Kathmandu has turned into a hotspot of the infection, the cabinet has recommended an additional week of prohibitory orders to be brought into effect in Kathmandu as opposed to the nation-wide issuance of lockdown measures for a week to be implemented from April 29, 2021.
