The Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association has raised egg prices effective from today, citing reduced production and growing demand.

The new farm-gate prices in Chitwan have been set at Rs. 480 per crate for large-sized eggs and Rs. 450 for medium-sized eggs, marking an increase of Rs. 30 per crate (30 eggs).

Association President Binod Pokharel said egg production has dropped significantly-from around 40,000 cartons daily four months ago to just 28,000–30,000 cartons.

According to Dr. Ananta Dahal, Associate Professor at the Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, high temperatures have led to decreased feed intake among laying hens, reducing production by around 25 percent. Seasonal diseases and increased humidity due to monsoon rains have further impacted poultry health and output.

Dr. Bijay Kumar Shrestha, Head of the National Poultry Disease Research Laboratory in Bharatpur, confirmed that H9 (H9N2) virus has been detected in 50 poultry farms in Chitwan and nearby districts, adding to the production challenges.
