Genre: Romantic comedy Director: Shashank Khaitan Cast: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Rituraj Singh, Yash Sinha and Atul Narang Being screened at QFX Cinemas Kathmandu Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan) sees Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) at a wedding reception, and Badrinath also known as Badri, falls for her. His best friend Somnath (Sahil Vaid), who is an aspiring matchmaker, becomes the bridge between two families to arrange the wedding. Badri is from a well-to-do family from Jhansi, while Vaidehi is from a middle-class family from another place Kota. Badri is a Class X graduate who helps in his father's business by collecting money from people to whom his father has given as loan. However, Vaidehi is a career-oriented woman and wants to do something on her own to fill the responsibility of a son in her family. And the movie Badrinath Ki Dulhania revolves around Badri's struggle in trying to woo Vaidehi. Shashank Khaitan's second film as director and writer has picked the realistic issue of today’s world — gender discrimination and dowry. Through the movie he has tried to point out gender discrimination and how it affects the life of a woman in society and what a woman can do if she is treated the same as a man. However, this Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania director has failed to put it all together with the love story of Badri and Vaidehi in his second film. Some parts of the plot do not add much. The first-half and second-half of the movie seem completely different, minus a convincing link. It is like watching two different movies that have the same conclusion. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a comedy but all comical scenes are overrated and forced — they exist to give justice to the romantic comedy genre of the movie. Whether the scene where Hrithik Roshan's look-alike is dancing and acting to impress the matchmakers or the scene where Badri gets molested by a group of men in Singapore, they don't sync with the story; it feels like these scenes have been added in the name of comedy. However, the actors, the beautiful cityscapes of India, Singapore and the musical score keep the film from falling apart. And the audience can relate to the main characters in terms of how they are able to make the audience cry and laugh with them. Bhatt's character represents a woman of today's generation. And she has successfully portrayed the character eloquently — she is bold enough to take steps necessary to do what’s best for her life. Then Dhawan is natural in his all parts — from being someone who is madly in love to a responsible son and to the confused guy who has to choose between his father and love. But you cannot forget Vaid's character where he has justified the role of an adorable, trustworthy and good friend of Badri.
