Kathmandu, January 27:
The Human Rights Organisation of Nepal’s chairman Charan Prasai and Nepal Bar Association’s central committee member Binod Nepal visited the District Police Office in Birgunj today to probe the condition of detainees.
HURON criticised the government and the Maoists for terrorising the people in the name of the ongoing conflict and urged both the parties to end their unwarranted activities.
Former member of the House of Representatives Ram Rizal and forty individuals including political activists and students under detention in the police office in Birgunj, are found to be terrorised by the police, Prasai said.
“The police have brutally beaten up the detainees in custody which is a clear violation of human rights,” he said.
Likewise, “the state is terrorising and discouraging students in Birgunj from participating in protests and peaceful demonstrations,” he said.
Prasai called on the government to end such practices of human rights violation and allow peaceful demonstrations.
Similarly, the Maoists are threatening people who have filed nominations for the upcoming municipal elections across the nation, according to him.
“We urge the Maoists to stop threatening those who have filed for nominations for the upcoming election and respect the individuals fundamental rights,” he said.
