NSU leader shot dead
Mahottari: An unidentified armed gang last night shot dead Nepal Students’ Union district leader Ram Dayal Yadav. A gang of 14 persons broke into his house at Aawar Tole in Ghirapur VDC and shot at him, said the Mahottari district police office. Yadav died en route to Janakpur Hospital, police said. Yadav was former chairman of the Free Students’ Union on the Janakpur-based Ramsagar Ramsworup Multiple Campus. — HNS
YCL seizes goods
DHANGADHI: Cadres of the Maoist-aligned Young Communist League (YCL) on Thursday night seized goods worth around Rs 28,000 and handed them over to the customs office. The YCL cadres said they seized the goods from Pandey Stores at Dhangadhi bazaar. The goods had been imported without paying customs charges, YCL sources said. The owner of the stores, Munim, denied he had brought the goods. — HNS
Body found
BARA: Harendra Prasad Yadav, 58, of Kachorwa-9 in Bara district was found dead near a pond at Simraungarh on Friday morning. His body was taken to Kalaiya Hospital for post-mortem, the Bara district police office said. The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained, police said. — HNS
DEO unlocked
DHANKUTA: Activists of the Pro-Maoist Educational Republic Forum and All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary on Friday unlocked the District Education Office and the Eastern Regional Education after 23 days. “We have suspended our agitation and given the government till June 25 to meet our demands,” said representatives of the organisations. The marking of SLC papers had been affected due to the lock out, Education Directorate Office sources said. — HNS
One killed in mishap
DHADING: One person was killed and six others injured when a truck (Ba 2 Kha 1630) loaded with stones turned turtle at Nursery area of Bhimdhunga VDC in Dhading on Thursday night. The truck was bound for Kathmandu from Dhading, police said. The deceased has been identified as Damai Lama, 25, of Chhatre Deurali VDC. The condition of one injured is critical, police said. — HNS
Bodies identified
NUWAKOT: All seven persons who died in the bus mishap at Nuwakot’s Khanigaun on Thursday have been identified. The dead are Buddhi Bahadur Gole, Shanker Tamang, Krishna Bahadur Dongol, Indian national Chhote Lal Sahani, Bishnu Maya Giri, Ashosa Adhikari and Tej Bahadur Tamang, said DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh. Tej Bahadur, Yashoda and Bishnu Maya were identified on Friday. The bodies have been handed over to relatives after post-mortem in Trishuli Hospital, police said, adding that some 10 of the 62 injured in the accident are in critical condition.— HNS
Traffic obstructed
SINDHUPALCHOWK: Locals of 54-kilometre area of Kavrepalanchowk district on Friday obstructed traffic on Araniko Highway to protest the manhandling of some youths by security personnel deployed for the security of Forest Minister Matrika Prasad Yadav. However, traffic resumed in the afternoon after an agreement was reached to provide compensation to the victims, said DSP at the Kavre district police office, Mahendra Pokhrel. Hundreds of passengers were stranded when locals blocked traffic on the highway. — HNS
Contraband seized
JHAPA: The Border Security Office (BSO) of the Armed Police Force (APF) on Friday seized smuggled goods in Chandragadhi of Jhapa district. The goods were being smuggled into Nepal from India. Goods, including T-shirts, chemical fertilizers, sugar, cooking oil, shoes, slippers and electric fans worth Rs 230,000 were seized, APF DSP Sameer Maharjan said, adding that the seized goods were handed over to the customs
